Obtained his M.Sc. (1973) and Ph.D. (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a
Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in
Europe and visited Universities, and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah
joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. He held
several positions in the University which include Dean, Faculty of Life sciences, Head of the
Department of Botany, Chairman, BOS in Botany, Head of the Department of Sericulture, Coordinator
and chairman BOS Biotechnology, Warden of S.K.U Hostels, Vice principal of S.K.
University college, Presently Prof. Pullaiah is Principal, S.K. University college. Prof. Pullaiah has
published 41 books, 220 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Recent Trends
in Biotechnology, Encyclopaedia of World Medicinal plants (5 Volumes); Recent trends inPlant
sciences; Medicinal plants in India (2 Volumes); Medicinal plants in Andhra Pradesh; Antidiabetic
plants in India and Herbal based Antidiabetic research; Embryology of Compositae; Flora of
Andhra Pradesh (5 Volmes); Text book of Embryology of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District;
Flora of Rangareddy District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool ; Flora of Nizamabad ;
Embryology and Apomixis in grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats Vol. 1,2,3; Biodiversity in India Vol.
1, 2, 3 and 4; Genetic resources and Biptechnology (3 volumes); etc. He is principal investigator
of 20 major research projects totaling more than Rs. One Crore funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC,
DAE, GCC, WWF, BSI etc. Under his guidance 45 students obtained their Ph.D.degree and 34
students their M.Phil.degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra
Pradesh, Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal of Indian Botanical Society and Y.D.Tyagi Gold
Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He was Vice President of Indian Botanical Society during 2004-05. He was a Member of Species urvival Commission, International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). Under Prof. Pullaiah’s leadership
Department of Botany got DST FIST programme, while Biotechnology Department got Rs. 1.64
Crores. He organized All India Botanical Conference during 2004, in which more than 300
delegates have participated. He is a member of DST project monitoring committee. |

Area of Specialization: Plant taxonomy, Biosystematics, Ethnobotany and Phytomedicine. He has
25 years of university teaching and 28 years of research experience. Completed 7 major
research projects funded by CSIR, DST, UGC, ICFRE & WWF. Guided 15 Ph.D and 18 M.Phil
degrees. Authored 2 books and published 100 research papers in national and international
journals. Attended several seminars/conferences/symposia organized at national and
international level and presented 125 papers. In addition, authored one text book for UG
courses (Telugu Academy), edited 2 books for PG courses and several book chapters for regular
and distance mode PG courses. Reported 9 new taxa belonging to Euphorbiaceae and
Asteraceae from the forests of Eastern Ghats, India and characterized a new bioactive
compound ‘tirumallotone’ from drug sample of Mallotus philippinensis. Described 750 wild
medicinal plants from the forests of Eastern Ghats and majority of them are rare, endemic,
endangered, little known potential drug yielding plants. Served as executive editor for Rheedea,
an international journal and also as secretary for the society on Indian Association for
Angiosperm Taxonomy. AP State council of Higher Education, Hyderabad nominated him as the
member for finalization of common core syllabus for UG courses. Fellow and the life member
of Indian Botanical Society, Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, International society
of Ethnobotany, International society for Allelopathy and Association of Plant Taxonomy.
Received A. P. State Meritorious Teacher Award from the Govt of Andhra Pradesh in 2008. Served
the University administration in various capacities like Dean, Academic affairs (2005 to 2008);
Chief Advisor, Central Library (2006 to 2008); UGC-Coordinator (2004 to 2005); Member,
Central Purchasing Committee (2004 to 2006); Convener, SKU Hostels Committee (2005); Cocoordinator
for Sports and Games (2004); Convener, Library Committee (2002); Member,
Central Admissions Committee (1998-2005); General Secretary, SKUTA (1997-1998); Deputy
Warden (1993-1994); Head, Dept. of Botany (1998-2001); Chairman, Board of Studies(1999-
2002 and 2005-2008), etc.,. Nominated as external member, Board of Studies for PG courses
by Andhra University, Osmania University, Kakatiya University, Maratwada Ambedkar University
and Gulberga University. Helped in taxonomic assessment, conservation and bioprospecting of
medicinal plants in Nallamalais, as member of advisory board, appointed by Department of
Forestry, Govt of Andhra Pradesh. Involved in several Joint Inspection Committees as convener,
appointed by APSCHE for sanction of New UG and PG colleges in the state. He is currently
working on isolation, characterization and biological evaluation of potential biodynamic molecules from rare, endemic and endangered medicinal plants from the forests of Eastern
Ghats, India. |
